Robyn Collier 2010 Exhibition

Katoomba Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of evocative oil paintings by Robyn Collier, opening Saturday 7th of August.

Robyn Collier is a self-taught artist of the realist tradition, known for her ability to capture light in her work. Robyn’s particular love of wilderness is evident in her painting and forms the inspiration for her depictions of remote landscapes, gathered from her extensive travels into Australia’s wild places.

Robyn’s paintings are held in corporate and private collections world wide including Barclays Bank, The Japanese Consul, and Cambridge University to name a few and she has held over 30 exhibitions.

Art, according to Robyn, is about original expression. “I simply want to show people the magic of the natural world through my eyes – to have them experience places they may never see.”

The exhibition to be held at Katoomba Fine Art is Robyn’s first in five years, and her first exhibition in the Blue Mountains in more than twenty years.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I like the flexibility and strength that painting in oils brings. My love of wild places has led me to specialise in painting wilderness and remote areas for at least 25 of the 35 years I have been a professional artist. I am a committed environmentalist. I belonging to many active environmental and walking groups.  My paintings have raised tens of thousands of dollars to help fund conservation and cancer projects.

I always need to spend time in a place to ‘feel’ the emotional and spiritual essence of a given area, even though most of my paintings are studio works these days.  Studio work I find can be very limiting in its inspiration if time isn’t taken to absorb the energy of the natural world.  My love of bush walking takes me to some very special and isolated places. The effort, I feel, is well worthwhile, feeling renewed and re-connected after a weekend of walking.

The inspiration for my work comes from various sources the most obvious being the rugged beauty of the Australian landscape. I have traveled Australia extensively. In the 1980’s I was one of the very few allowed into the Sydney catchment areas to paint. In fact the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board (as it was then known) purchased 12 of my paintings to hang in their Sydney offices. I have been invited as Artist in Residence to some of the most prestigious resorts.

Apart from the appeal of painting remote areas, I love to paint the light which is a feature of most of my work. Art, I feel is about original expression and I am unashamedly realist in the work I portray and the way I portray it. The differences, I believe are what makes art so exciting and interesting. There is no right way to create works of art or to express an individual, artistic point of view. My philosophy is simple and needs no complex interpretation. “I simply want to show people the magic of the natural world through my eyes – to have them experience places they may never see.”
